Chapter 10: The Search and the Setback

The moment I decided to stop hiding, a new fire ignited within me. I was no longer a passive passenger in my own body; I became a researcher, a detective on a mission. I returned to the international medical forums, digging through clinical trials and surgical articles until I found a term that changed my prospective: Artificial Anal Sphincter.

  1. A Flicker of Hope

I started visiting surgeons in my country, asking if anyone had known about this surgery. Most hadn`t, or advised me to let it go. Finally, one doctor confirmed the extend of my nerve damage through new tests and promised to help me find a clinic abroad. For a few days, I felt like I had an ally. But then, the silence returned – he stopped answering my calls. I was back to square one, but this time, I wasn`t giving up.

  1. The Belgian Connection

I took matters into my own hands. I searched for stories of other people and found an article about a patient with a different but related issue. Following that trail, I reached out to several hospitals.

  • The first offer was staggering – an astronomical sum (again) through a medical tourism consultant.
  • The second offer came from a clinic in Belgium. There were no middlemen, just a direct line to the hospital, and the cost was significantly lower.

Without hesitation, I scheduled an appointment. For the first time in years, I had a date on the calendar that represented a better future.

  1. The Infection: A New Battle

But as the saying goes, life is what happens while you`re making other plans. Just as I was preparing for Belgium, a small, seemingly insignificant callus on my paralyzed foot became infected.

Because of the nerve damage (paresis), my foot had always been numb, It was weak, but at least it didn`t hurt. That changed overnight. The numbness was replaced by a throbbing, relentless infection that lasted for months.

  1. Walking on Thin Ice

I went through a cycle of antibiotics, daily dressings, and even a minor surgery, but nothing worked. The infection would subside for a few days only to return with a vengeance. Doctors couldn`t explain why it wouldn`t heal.

Some days, the swelling was so severe I couldn`t even fit my foot into a shoe. Every step was an agony. My “good” foot was now my only support and Belgium seemed like slipping through my fingers. I was fighting for my dignity on one front and for my ability to walk on the other…

Have you ever felt like you finally took one step forward, only for life to push you two steps back? I would love to hear your thoughts or your own stories of overcoming setbacks in the comments below. Let`s support each other!
